Litter-decomposing macrofungi are generally considered to be a major component of decomposer fungal communities and to play indispensable roles in leaf litter decomposition because of their unique ability to cause lignin decomposition. To date, however, few studies have provided quantitative accounts of the diversity, life history, and functioning of litter-decomposing macrofungi and their variation along climatic gradients.
