The pathogenic yeast Candida albicans long was considered asexual.Sexual forms had not been reported in a century of observation, it seems incapable of meiosis, and most isolates carry both mating type locus (MTL) alleles, preventing mating.Sex becomes possible, however, following MTL allele loss, and it is now held to be an occasional mode of reproduction. However, C.albicanss ability to engage in sex does not necessarily imply that sex enhances parents chances to pass on their genes by generating competitive recombinant lineages.
