Plasma fatty acid concentration is significantly elevated during fasting similar as plasma glucose wave after food ingestion.The higher fatty acid level in blood is tightly correlated with insulin resistance in obese and diabetic patients.We examined how palmitic acid (PA), one of the major saturated dietary fatty acids affects skeletal muscle glucose uptake.Using both cell and animal model systems, in a short-term treatment (within 3 h) we found that PA could stimulate GLUT4 translocation and glucose uptake through the activation of Akt.
