According to parents’ reports, children with asthma have decreased lung function and frequently exacerbate asthma, linked to their passive smoking. The level of continine (the major metabolite of nicotine in the urine) in the passive smoker’s urine was measured, which is further insight into this association. Methods The authors determined urinary cotinine levels in 199 asthmatic children, and 145 of them also performed lung function studies. One of the children’s parents answered the question about the child’s passive smoking. A review of medical records confirms the dramatic increase in asthma in the previous year.
