中国农村村民委员会,是1983年废除人民公社制度后在县、乡(镇)政府以下设置的一级农村基层群众性自治组织。它负责办理本村的公共事务和公益事业,调解民间纠纷,协助维护社会治安;支持和组织村民发展生产,承担本村生产的服务和协调工作;依法管理本村属于村民集体所有的土地和其它财产,维护集体经济组织和村民、承包经营户和联户的合法的财产权和其它合法权益;开展多种形式的社会主义精神文明建设活动;协助乡(镇)人民政府开展工作,向人民政府反映村民的意见、要求,并提出建议。截至1997年底,全国农村共有村委会905804个,村委会干部3788041名。
