我国花卉栽培历史悠久,素有“世界园艺之母”的美称。早在公元前五世纪,《礼记》中已有“季秋之月,鞠有黄华”的记载。可见菊花在我国至少有三千多年历史。此外,芍药有二千多年历史,牡丹有一千四百多年历史,梅花、蕙兰、桃花、玉兰、水仙、山茶花等,也都有千年以上的栽培史。我国幅员辽阔,自然生态环境复杂,形成了极为丰富的植物种质资源。其中花卉种类之多,为世界之首。举例如下:
