东北细毛羊自1967年育成品种后,经过不断的选育,无论在质量和数量方面均有较大的提高和发展。东北细毛羊体大,产毛量高,生长发育快,耐粗饲适应性强。羊毛品质优良,织品与澳毛的纺织品无差异。但由于育成历史较短,尚存在某些缺陷和不足。如净毛率较低,头毛稍欠整齐,浅黄及黄色油汗的羊仍占一定比例等,急待改进和提高。
