变形链球菌是目前公认的主要致龋菌，牙膏是防龋、抗龋的重要手段之一。我们采集了３４种市售牙膏（其中国产牙膏２５种，中外合资牙膏９种）作对变链菌ｃ、ｅ、ｆ血清型菌株的抑菌作用，结果显示：实验中所用的所有牙膏对变链菌血清型都有不同程度的抑菌作用，其中，广州产的黑妹儿童牙膏的作用最强，最全面；国产牙膏与中外合资牙膏的作用比较，两者无差异；国产牙膏中的儿童牙膏对变链菌ｃ、ｅ、ｆ血清型的作用，明显强于成人牙膏。
Streptococcus mutans is currently recognized as the main cariogenic bacteria, toothpaste is one of the important means of anti-caries, anti-caries.
