Objective To investigate the coping style of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and their correlation with quality of life. Methods From March 2010 to January 2011, 120 BPH inpatients from 7 hospitals in Hefei City were assessed with the questionnaire of medical coping style (MCMQ) and quality of life universal scale 1 ~ 2 days before transurethral resection of the prostate SF-36 survey. Results The score of avoidance coping in BPH patients was higher than that of common patients (P <0.001), and the yield response scores were lower than those of common patients (P = 0.003). There was no significant difference between coping scores and norm (P = 0.710). There was a negative correlation between yield response and patient quality of life (P <0.01). Avoid coping style was only weakly negatively correlated with physical health. Conclusions Patients with BPH are more likely to adopt avoidance coping than general clinical patients, less coping with yield, and patients with yield coping are less likely to have quality of life.
