The string quartet is the only form of Beethoven’s later years in which he expresses his complex emotions. Beethoven’s early quartet, despite traces of imitation, is distinct from Haydn’s neat and fluid style of Mozart’s pleasing singing. From time to time, Beethoven’s peculiar shyness and victorious spirit are revealed. By mid-term, however, his musical sense was clearly formed.
