On December 11, 1997, AT & T and China’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications formally signed an agreement on the construction and maintenance of laying the first Sino-U.S. Direct optical fiber cable project in Washington. The cable system will also be extended to other countries in the Asia Pacific region and the project is expected to be delivered by the end of 1999. After the completion of the fiber optic cable network project between China and the United States, it will become an important international telecommunications hub for transmission between the United States and the Asia Pacific region
