In August 2003, the FAA issued a National Authorization Certificate (COA) to the United States Air Force to allow the United States Air Force’s Global Hawk RQ-4 UAV to fly in the United States’ airspace. This is the first UAV to receive a U.S. COA. The Global Hawk has also been authorized to fly in airspace in Australia, Portugal, Spain, Scotland, Denmark, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Venezuela and Ecuador. UAV experts say this signals that UAVs will “line up and fly” like manned aircraft.
