《史记》的生命之树为何长盛不衰？其根本原因在于它是无与伦比的“百科全书”，具有独特的民族凝聚力，是中国人的根柢书，此外，它还体现出四大特点：第一，是民族文化的浓缩；第二，是反映民族共同心理的历史哲学；第三，其历史与文学的成就遣泽后世；第四，司马迁崇高的人格、创新的精神激励人生奋发有为。《史记》研究总成果的统计与分析表明，二千多年来《史记》研究始终受到重视，８０年代以来更是达到高峰，且具有研究方法多样化的新特点。当代《史记》研究的趋势是提高与普及双向发展。
