19世纪中叶,清政府在各地设立书局,刊刻传统经典著作,试图传播正统的价值观念,重建清廷的统治权威。咸丰九年(1859年),胡林翼在湖北设立书局,刊刻《读史兵略》、《弟子箴言》等书,开晚清地方书局之先河。此后,曾国藩、李鸿章、张之洞、刘坤一、马新贻、左宗棠等地方大员在各地纷纷设立书局,如金陵书局、广雅书局、江西书局、浙江书局、正谊书局等,刊刻因战乱焚毁的经典书籍。这是他们为恢复地方名教、复兴地方文化事业的自觉行为,由此传统文化再次勃兴。然而,书局的运行、书籍的刊刻,均需要大量的费用,书局的经费成为地方官员关注的内
In the middle of the 19th century, the Qing government set up bookstores in various places and published traditional classics in an attempt to spread orthodox values and rebuild the Qing authority. Xianfeng nine years (1859), Hu Linyi set up a bookstore in Hubei, published a “read the history of soldiers”, “disciple Proverbs” and other books, opening a local bookstore precedent.
