The Wartsila two-stroke business originated from the large engine division of Sulzer Bros in Winterthur, Switzerland. In 1997, this business was acquired by Wartsila and Fincantieri of Italy and New Sulzer Diesel (NSD) was created. In 2006, NSD was wholly owned by Wartsila. However, although Wartsila is a Finnish company, the two-stroke business is still headquartered in Winterthur, while the former Fincantieri GMT engine manufacturing plant in Trieste, Italy, develops large-scale dual-fuel engines, including gas-fuel two-stroke machines. However, with the emergence of China’s shipbuilding power, this pattern has changed.
