Abstract:Lead-in is the first step of the English classroom teaching. It plays an essential role for revision. A good lead-in can show the difficult points of the new class more clearly, activate the atmosphere of classroom, stimulate the interests and arouse the enthusiasm of students in learning. The author conducted a survey for Grade 7 in Guyuan No.3 Junior High School by the means of classroom observation and questionnaire, aiming to know about the current situation of lead-in in the English classroom teaching in junior high schools, to identify the main problems and thus to take feasible ways in lead-in methods to improve the efficiency of the classroom teaching.

1Relevant Theoretical Bases of Lead-in
1.1 The Definition of Lead-in
Lead-in is also called prologue. It refers to the teacher using a variety of method in the teaching of new class, to arouse students’ attention, and to stimulate students’ interest in the category of teaching activities. “Lead” means to attract students’ attention to class. “In” means to make the students get into the best status as soon as possible, and follow teachers involuntarily to think into the new topic.Lead-in is a general term of all the teaching activities in the first five minutes of the classroom teaching. Lead-in includes “lead” and “go into”. “Lead” means the way that the teacher attracts students’ attention, arouses their interest and leads them into the state of learning by using some imaginative method according to the teaching content. Lead-in is a way of behavior that the teacher guides the students into the state of learning quickly at the beginning of the classroom teaching or some teaching activities. It is the first step of the classroom teaching and the key to stimulate the students’ interest in learning the new knowledge. In a word, lead-in is a behavior that the teacher leads students into the state of learning the new knowledge at the beginning of the classroom teaching. It creates a relaxing and harmonious class atmosphere, to attract students’ attention in learning content, arouses their interest and curiosity, actives their learning motivation, helps them to establish the connection between the old and new knowledge, and lets them have a clear idea of what they are going to learn in this class, thus causes the students to have a goal in study, then the lead-in could provide a good start for the whole class. 1.2 The Methods of Lead-in
There are many different methods of lead-in in the practical English classroom teaching. There are listed as follows: (1) free talk (2) group discussion (3) the use of multimedia (4) the introduction of cultural knowledge (5) story-telling (6) asking questions (7) role-play (8) setting the scene (9) songs (10) duty report etc.In short, there are no rigid methods to lead in the lessons. They can be varying according to different teaching contents and the students’ characteristics.
1.3 The Functions of Lead-in
There are mainly functions of lead-in as follows: first, the function of lead-in is that it can arouse the students’ interest. It is known that interest is the best teacher. the teacher not only impactful knowledge in the teaching process, but also try to find a way to arouse students’ interest, let them feel thirsty for knowledge and desire to learn, make a commitment in learning, then students will be active to acquire new knowledge and their learning efficiency will be improved greatly. Meanwhile, stimulating students’ learning motivation also helps to keep students’ attention. So the teacher must grasp the psychological characteristics of students, and arouses their motivation as an important task.
Second, the function of lead-in is that it can attract the students’ attention. When the class begins, the students may be still in a state of excitement. They cannot focus their attention on the class. If the teacher can lead in the new topic effectively according to the teaching content at this time, such as to show a picture or to play the music, the students’ attention will be drawn to the class within several minutes. Then, they will listen more carefully in the class.
2 Research Design
2.1 Research Questions
In this research, the author mainly focuses on the following questions:
(1) What are the existing problems of lead-in in Guyuan No.3 Junior High School English classroom?
(2) How to effectively carry out the lead-in of the English classroom teaching in junior high schools?
2.2 Research Subjects
In this investigation, the subjects are 10 English teachers and 100 students from Grade 7 in Guyuan No.3 Junior High School. The author makes the investigation for 10 Grade 7English teachers through the classroom observation and questionnaire. The 100 students are randomly chosen from Grade 7to do the questionnaires.
3 Results and Discussion
3.1 Results and Discussion of Classroom Observation
In the observation, the author focuses on the following aspects: the methods of lead-in that the teacher uses, whether the lead-in establishes the connection between the old and new knowledge, and different effects by using different methods of lead-in and the length of lead-in. The results of the observation are as follows:

The author hopes others who want to do this thesis to conduct the research in more schools and make further discussion of the problems in the future. Then the results will be more complete and convincing.
