1992年12月,石门县太平街乡苏家台村村民杨继洲发现本乡雷神洞里有娃娃鱼栖息,并孵化有幼娃娃鱼。通过观察,幼娃娃鱼一般在晚上10点出水找食;剖开两尾受伤死亡的娃娃鱼,发现肠子内有小砂子,蝙蝠粪便和发臭的蝙蝠肉末(岩洞壁上撞死的蝙蝠)。杨继洲九渡河乡袁家峪村利用山泉水挖了一口0.4亩的养殖池,池底铺有小砂子,水深达到1.2m,池的周围砌有1.5m高的砖墙,在进水口的一角挖一个2m深的洞,上用薄石块砌成岩棚遮阴,供娃娃鱼栖息,利用山泉水自流入池。从今年元月份起陆续进洞捕起4—10cm长的幼苗394尾,开始了娃娃鱼的人工饲养。在饲养管理方面,每日晚上投喂小鱼虾、猪粪、蝇蛆、死青蛙、臭猪肝等等;
