Researchers at the University of Florida require patients to take insulin orally as a means of preventing or at least delaying the onset of insulin-dependent or type 1 diabetes. Let the body learn to tolerate allogeneic proteins just like daily consumption of food. Researchers hope to induce insulin resistance in high-risk patients with type 1 diabetes by orally administering insulin and recombinant glutamate dehydrogenase (GAD) to a patient’s pancreatic β-cells or producing insulin-producing cells.
