Podocytes in renal glomerulus express unusualintermediate filament proteins (IFs) for visceralepithelial cells. IFs cytoskeleton is mainly composed ofvimentin, nestin and desmin. Tissue injury is oftenaccompanied by changes in gene expression of IFs.Enhanced desmin staining in podocytes are observed in avariety of rat experimental models of podocyte injuryincluding puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN)nephrosis. It has not been elucidated whetherexpression of vimentin and nestin is up-regulated inpodocyte injury. To further gain insight into expression ofIFs in podocytes, we investigated the time course ofvimentin, nestin and desmin in PAN nephrosis.
