The Energy Systems Research Group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Strathclyde University has developed a peculiar counter-rotating tidal current turbine. They built a 0.8 m diameter reduction model and tested it at the university’s towed pool. The results of the test provided information for the design and construction of a prototype of a larger diameter 2.5 m. The prototype has been sea tested and the results are encouraging. This paper reports on the advanced nature of the Turbocharged Turbines, the principles of engineering design, the testing process in experimental ponds and oceans, and shows how the data obtained from the tests can be used to verify the correctness of the design method. This article gives some conclusions by reporting on the progress made in designing and developing grid-connected devices.
