朱洗先生字玉文,浙江临海人,生于1900年8月20日。幼年读过一个时期的私塾才进入小学。小时候在农村时常和同龄的儿童做“斗草”游戏——收集各种野生花草,举出名称,彼此相比。“在高等小学常听到进化论、天演论等新名词,当时的老师也大谈其‘物竞天择’、‘适者生存’的道理”(朱洗:生物的进化,序言)。这一切可能都在他心里播下了生物学的种子。
