In vitro expansion of hematopoietic progenitor cells is extremely important for cancer therapy, gene therapy and transfusion medicine. Although cell culture is widely used to study the biocompatibility of implants, there are no reports that support autologous hematopoietic stem cell augmentation materials. The authors screened a number of commercial polymers (15 species), metals (4 species), and glassware to study their ability to support hematopoietic stem cell proliferation under clinical conditions. Peripheral blood (PB) CD34 cells and mononuclear cells (MNC) cultures were used to assess the expansion capacity of total cells and granulocyte colony forming unit CFU-GM. It has been found that cultured human hematopoietic cells in serum-free media are particularly sensitive to matrix materials
