There is ample evidence that neutrophils (NPs) play a role in acute lung injury in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In vitro studies provide the theoretical basis for this. Animal experiments to reduce NP suggest that in some types of acute lung injury, changes in vascular permeability and the development of pulmonary edema, a suitable amount of NP is required in the circulation. Some observers have proposed the concept of NP-dependent lung injury and found that reducing some NPs with ARDS does not affect the extent of lung injury. The authors reported that 4 had occurred during the NP reduction
