Recent studies have shown that low plasma fibrinolytic (fibrinolysis) activity is due to an increase in plasminogen inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), a plasma inhibitor of fibrinolysis. The authors found that insulin resistance is associated with cardiovascular disease and is associated with elevated plasma PAI-1 concentrations. The latter often associated with hyperinsulinemia can partially explain the relationship between insulin and coronary heart disease. It has long been reported that fat lovers have low fibrinolytic activity. The author recognizes
