February 2: On February 2, 1971, Wetlands International signed a global intergovernmental convention on the conservation of wetlands in Ramsar, Iran, which was then a global convention on the conservation of nature of a particular ecosystem. In October 1996, the Standing Committee of the International Convention on Wetlands decided to set February 2 each year as World Wetlands Day. On this day, government agencies, organizations and citizens can take big and small steps to raise public awareness of the value and benefits of wetlands.
