妓女起源于原始宗教崇拜的神巫文化,在意识形态上与原始舞蹈具有一脉相通的娱神性功能。在古希腊罗马时期具有较高社会地位的妓女到公元前6世纪因雅典城邦“国营妓院”的建立而进入世俗经济领域,社会地位降低的妓女在沦为娱乐男性的工具的同时,因其尊严被践踏而成了污秽卑贱的代言词。妓女形象与城市文化紧密联系,也可以说“是妓女在衬托着一个城市的生活方式和它的意识形态。从这个角度看,妓女在文学中有点像向导或城市的线索,通过她们来表达对城市的感受,来表现其既繁华又堕落,既诱人又黑暗的状态。她们不但代表了城市的矛盾,也代表了城市和妓女的一种互相的写照”。[1]
