1996年12月11日中午12时25分,是一个历史性时刻:董建华先生以300票的多数,当选为中华人民共和国香港特别行政区第一任行政长官。为此,全球几乎所有新闻镜头一齐对准了他。董建华原是一位大商人,他是“东方海外”(国际)有限公司主席兼总裁、汇丰银行董事、星岛集团非执行董事(当选行政长官后均已辞职)。同时,他也是政治舞台上的活跃人物:他曾任职行政局议员、港事顾问、基本法咨询委员、全国政协委员、特区筹委会副主任委员、香港管理协会会长、美国华威顿国际战略研究中心干事、中国远洋集团高级顾问、香港总商会执委等。他的父亲董浩云先生是开拓香港的三大企业家之一。1977年,董建华出任“东方海外”和“金山轮船公司”总裁,并于次年全部接掌祖业。

His father, Mr. Tung Ho-wan, is one of the top three entrepreneurs in Hong Kong. In 1977, Tung Chee-hwa served as president of “OOCL” and “Jinshan Shipping Company”, and took over the ancestral home in the following year.
