The performance of self-lubricating bronze bearings depends on a combination of factors such as finished density, radial crush strength (RCS), oil content, surface roughness, applied load, shaft speed and pore structure. The density of compact and sintered body, as well as the dimensional change during sintering (DC), are important in bearing manufacture. This article describes a series of new bronze powders for the production of high performance sintered bearings. Performance measurements show that these bearings have lower coefficient of friction, lower and stable temperature rise, and higher radial crush strength than bearings made with standard premixed bronze powder. Excellent performance is due to the smaller pore structure of the communication, which can absorb a large amount of oil through excellent capillary action. In theory, higher RCS allows bearings to have a higher load carrying capacity.
