Since being released on March 4th, 2016, Disney movie Zootopia has gained great sales and comments. When being amazed by vivid and interesting description of dozens of animals, have you noticed those fascinating plants designed wholeheartedly by developers? Let’s go together with Officer Judy and explore them in Zootopia!
Phoenix dactylifera and travelerstree, desert exit
With Judy’s train gradually approaching Zootopia, various scenes of the city began to show in front of us. The first approach is the desert region, where the most striking one is the tall palm casino hotel, whose prototype plant is Phoenix dactylifera known to all.
Phoenix dactylifera belongs to palm thorn sunflower species, native to the desert regions of Central Asia. Its trunk can be up to a height of more than 10 meters. Those long diamond-shaped marks on the trunk are in fact traces left by falling leaves. On the top of the tall trunk is a cluster of large pinnate leaf with the length of up to 2-4 meters.
In desert region of the Middle East region, Phoenix dactylifera is the most iconic plant, not only because it is tall in shape, but also because it is an important source of sugar among people of the Middle East. Fruits of Phoenix dactylifera are called date palms, because no matter in terms of heads or color, they resemble jujube very much. Date palms have very high sugar content, more than 50% of whose dry weight is sucrose and fructose-based sugar. Hence dried date palms taste like candied same. In Arab countries during Ramadan, people should not diet during the day, thus date palm become an important source of sugar in this period. Therefore, people in the Middle East always like to plant some Phoenix dactylifera trees around their houses. Consequently Phoenix dactylifera being a representative plant of desert areas is not surprising.
Representative of Frozen Region:
Coniferous forest
After leaving the hot desert area enter the frozen one. Though plant there is limited, area of snow is not a lot, there is a typical kind- coniferous forest.
In the Earth's vast north temperate coniferous forests, the dominant species are Abies, Picea, etc., both of which arePinaceae. With a typical cone, looking from afar, they are like pagodas, whose leaves never fall even in the cold winter. So after the snow, there tends to accumulate thick snow on their branches, forming a special landscape of the region. Since Abies and Picea are pagoda-shaped with a cross on their top, they are viewed as the symbol of Jesus Christ in northern Europe. Early in the 16th century, northern Germany had the custom of worshiping God using branches of these trees, which later evolved into the production of Christmas tree, inherited by people.
Main city:
street trees and garden plants from the tropics
In the movie, there are many plants in the main city, from which we can generally infer major climate types.
When Judy train was entering the train station, we can see a row of palm-like plants. Comparing to the previously mentioned Phoenix dactylifera, their trunk is thinner with ringed circle on it. They actually belong to Areca or Archontophoenix genus. Areca is very familiar to us, a tropical plant whose fruit is made into betel nuts favored by some parts of the South. Whereas Archontophoenix is quite similar to Areca, which is only different in florescence. Both of them are widely distributed in tropical regions. Because of their beautiful shape, they are often used as street trees and ornamental plants.
Rainforest,
magic plants saving Judy from death
During the detection process of Judy and Nick, there occurred a thrilling fight in the rainforest. When falling from the bridge, a rainforest plant with large leaves saved their lives. So, what is this magical plant? In fact, it is a common cultivated plant in many families- green radish (Epipremnumaureum).
Epipremnumaureumsare native to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, growing in local dense rainforest. At present, they have been widely distributed in tropical regions. Different from those in common families, in a wild environment, their leaves can grow to half a meter long. Furthermore, relying on aerial roots growing on the petioles, they can cling to tens of meters high above the trees, very spectacular looking from afar. It is because of the large blade and good climbing characteristics that they continuously eased the falling speed of Judy and Nick hence allowing them a safe landing.
