高速钢的红硬性随着淬火温度之增高而增强(但不可以过热),因此过去在一些资料裏都建议采用较高的淬火温度。但是在现代,当工具制造方面的技术科学已具有相当高的水平时,人们已开始全面地注意到高速钢的机械性能,这种单纯从红硬性出发的观点就必须适当加以修改了。在高速钢刀具工作时,有时会发生断裂或崩壞的现象。对於小直径(小於1~2公厘)的鑽头,断裂的情形更为常见。要使刀具在工作时不破坏,就必须提高它的机械性能。但是,如何获得优良的机械性能呢?那些因素影响着它的机械性能呢?下面是有关这问题的研讨。
