The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine to Peter C. Doherty of Australia and Rolf M. Zinkernagel of Switzerland in recognition of their work on the mechanisms of the immune system contribution. Doherty is currently a professor at the Philadelphia Institute of Medicine in Philadelphia and St. Jude Pediatric Research Institute. It took 23 years for Jinkerselge and he finally figured out how the body’s immune system recognized the virus-infected cells and cleared them.
