老舍在他的《老牛破车》一书的《我怎样写短篇小说》一文中说:“我最早的一篇短篇小说还是在南开中学教书时写的;纯为敷衍学校刊物的编辑者,没有别的用意,这是十二三年前的事了。这篇东西当然没有什么可取的地方,在我的写作经验里也没有一点重要,因为它并没引起我的写作兴趣。”尽管我们大体同意老舍自己的意见:他的“创作历史应由《老张的哲学》算起”。但对研究老舍思想发展和创作道路的人,这最早的一篇小说却是不应忽视的。
