Thomson • Marconi Sonar Ltd. (TMS) and CSIRO are jointly developing an ultrasonic mine imaging system to image underwater mine mines in turbid water conditions. The system will be integrated into the mine-killing system on the new Huynne class hunting gear of the Royal Australian Navy. Through mine-training conducted in the northern Australian waters, operational requirements for mine sound imaging systems were identified. About 25% of the hunting time is estimated to have been wasted, as the glenoid TV camera on the remote control mine does not provide the correct identification of mines in the muddy waters of the northern coast. Under the first development contract of 1997, TMS is developing an engineering prototype for a mine-borne sound imaging system. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), a major subcontractor, has expertise in the field of medical ultrasound. Defense Science and Technology Organization provided other technical support, development and utilization
