恩格尔伯格先生是世界著名的机器人专家,他以“机器人之父”的称号享誉全世界.1958年他建立了Unimation公司,并于1959年研制出世界上第一台工业机器人“Unimate”,他对创建机器人工业做出了杰出的贡献.就在工业机器人销售火爆的时候,由于认定服务机器人具有光明的前景,1983年他和他的同事毅然决然地以1.07亿美元将Unimation公司卖给了西屋公司,用这笔收入成立了TRC(TRANSITIONS RE-SEARCH CORPORATION)公司,专门研究服务机器人.TRC公司研制的第一个产品是“护士助手”(HelpMate)机器人,到1995年初它已在40多家医院中使用,其中美国最多,日本有5家,德国有一家.本刊写信给恩格尔伯格先生,希望他就机器人对中国工业的重要意义以及服务机器人的前景给中国读者讲几句话,下面就是他的回信.
