This summer holiday, I attended the sixth Summer English Program in Binzhou Teachers’ College. Five American teachers came to Binzhou and taught us for one month. From these old teachers, we learned many things, including knowledge, teaching methods and a spirit of loving work. Our spoken English and listening got much progress.
First, we knew many American English idioms, such as “It’s raining cats and dogs.” “You are in the dog house.” We also know many proverbs, such as “Blood is thicker than water.” “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Haste makes waste.” “Where there is a will, there is a way.” “Variety is the spice of life.” and so on. Our American teacher also told us many stories about Bible and we knew many western holidays such as “Valentine’s Day ” “Easter” “Halloween” “Mother’s Day” “Thanksgiving Day ”. We knew Easter is a great festive Christian holiday that celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. On this day, children dye and decorate Easter eggs. Some eggs are put in Easter baskets with jellybeans and other candy. Miss Pat asked me to bring white eggs for Easter. We dye the eggs into different colors and put it into the basket. We also held a Wedding Ceremony. Our teacher asked a single boy as groom and a girl as bride. They held a wonderful wedding. We ate cakes and drink juice. We felt we were truly in America, in a church. On Christmas Day, we saw a true Christmas tree. We all like it and took photos with the Christmas tree.
Second, we learned many teaching methods from our American teachers. For example, when we tired in class, Miss pat will play a game with us. It is called “ Simon says” game. This game makes us laugh and get a good rest. During one month studying, we learned many beautiful English songs. Like “Every Day in China ” “ Edelweiss” “Top of the world ” “Auld Lang Syne ” and so on. Every afternoon we saw many famous film like “Sound of Music” “Titanic” and “Free Willy”. Sometimes, we listened to lectures about Education in America (Wanda), Economy between American teachers and Chinese Teacher (Dennis), Music in America (Betty), Religion in America (Pat). She told me something about Bible, God, and church, Christian and so on because Pat is a Christian. Sometimes we played UNO-an American card. It is very interesting. we also played many interesting games, like carrying water with a little spoon and playing the American famous ball-baseball. Through these things, we not only learned much knowledge but also improved our spoken English and listening and we didn’t feel tired.
Third, from the teachers, we saw a spirit- devotion to their own work. Among the five American teachers, Wanda is the youngest-53 years old. Pat is 66. Betty Sue is already 72. But these old teachers love their teaching work very much.Every summer holiday they come to China. They said they didn’t like staying at home and doing housework all day. They said they liked China and the Chinese people very much. Just like this beautiful song says: “Every day in China is sweeter than the day before. Every day in China, I love her more and more…” When we sing this song every time, we are deeply moved. We also love and respect our American teachers. We should learn them and try our best to do our own work well.
One month quickly passed. Our teachers came back to the USA. They will go on working in their own school. They left us many useful things. They will be of benefit to all my life.
