流行音乐(通俗音乐、大众音乐)发出、传达给听众的声音有两种:一种是人声,另一种是乐器声——包括乐器之外的音响设备所发出的声音。60年代以后,流行音乐的乐队纷纷采用电声化的乐器以及乐器之外的音响设备。可以说,现在无论中外,不给乐器“通电”,不附加乐器之外的音响设备,流行音乐就演奏、演唱不起来。起初,流行音乐的乐器,例如甲壳虫兴起之初,只有三把吉他:一独奏,一伴奏,一低音,加上鼓。由低音乐器(尤其是大鼓)以及各式钹敲击节奏。这样的传统一直延续到现在。可以说,不击节,就没有流行音乐。而经典音乐中绝对不可以有用来击节的乐器。
