On 3 April 2014, the European Space Agency launched the Sentinel-1A satellite at the European Space Base in Kourou, French Guiana, as part of a revolutionary satellite laser communications system In part, the Satellite’s Advanced Optical Communications Payload (OCP) incorporates Renishaw’s latest space-grade grating technology. OCP provides optical communications links from the Earth’s near-Earth orbit (LEO) to the geosynchronous (GEO) via a pair of laser communications terminals (LCTs) at TesatSpacecom (Tesat), a space communications company in Backnang, Germany. GEO LCT is currently installed on the European Space Agency’s Alpha Sat. Renishaw’s products debuted in space, marking a new milestone in technology adoption.
