甜菜作为重要糖源作物大面积栽培仅仅始于十九世纪。在这一百多年的历程中,无论甜菜生产或制糖工业都取了蓬勃的发展。甜菜种植范围几乎扩展到所有适种地区,遍及四十多个国家,种植面积已达到一亿三千多万亩(1984)。比三十年前增加一倍,同期内的甜菜单产由1420公斤/亩,提高到2050公斤/亩,增长44.1％。甜菜糖产量超过三千七百多万吨(1982/1983),比五十年代中期翻了一番,占世界总糖量的40％左右,不仅在史界农业和工业革命中居重要地位。而且在世界经济和人民生活方面也日益产生着广泛的影响。
