次生林就是天然次生林的简称。是原始林受人为或自然因素破坏后,自然恢复或经过一定程度的封禁而重新恢复起来的森林。也可以把“次生林”理解为“再生林”。次生林一般都是受过多次人类活动的破坏而逆行演替的不稳定群落,大多是由比较能够适应恶劣环境条件的先锋树种组成的派生林。但是,不能把次生林均视为经济价值低的森林,也就是不能将次生林的“次”看成是次品的
