The midpoint of 1790, marking the social or private library movement in New England, also marks the birth of New England’s first public library in Franklin, Mass. What happened? The one-off motion before the Massachusetts legislature in 1778 called for a town of about thirty kilometers south-west of Boston to merge and designate the city as Exeter. This is usually the case when the legislature chooses the name Franklin, whose name is an abundant source of town names for the early patriots and statesmen.
