This paper is concerned with Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL) evolving or developing — with central features that have characterized the development of SFL such as the ongoing “territorial expansion” in different fields of activity(theory,description,comparison,analysis,application,and so on),with the nature of “knowledge construction in SFL,” and of frontiers of development and with current frontiers of activity.Research gaps in terms of descriptive coverage of languages are identified in the course of the discussion.Towards the end of the paper,resonances with development outside SFL are explored.The paper concludes with a “SWOT analysis” of the current state of development of SFL.Also included is a tabular survey of areas of activity and key references to handbooks and thematic edited volumes of SFL work.
