The town in a way is like a stage.The backdrop is its gaudy shops withtheir hand-painted advertising signs.~2 Theactors left and right.These are warriors.Handsome,dark and tall,their sarongs shineiridescent red~3 in the late glow of afternoon.The tips of their spears fire blades of lightinto your eyes.~4 Their gait is leisurely andsure,in the true Samburu~5 way.The scenes are enacted all along the leafystreets,at the market,and on the verandas ofthe shops.We,the audience,are participatingtoo.We did so by entering the town.This is Maralal.It’s a trade and timber
