前记解放前一年一九四八年寓居香港时,夏衍同志在主編“华商报”的副刊“茶亭”。在他的鼓舞和督促之下,讓我把在国民党管制区的抗日战爭的一段回忆写出,逐日在报上发表了。所写的是上海、南京失守后,准备保卫大武汉而終于放弃了大武汉的那一阶段。写到长沙大火、退駐桂林、准备撤退至重庆,我在香港的寓居生活要結束了。那是一九四八年十一月淮海会战的前夕,我要离开香港、进入解放区了。因此,我的回忆录便自然告一段落。

It was on the eve of the Huaihai Campaign in November 1948 and I was leaving Hong Kong and entering the Liberated Areas. Therefore, my memoir will naturally come to an end.
