We have previously found that monoamine transmitter in the brain of reserpine-induced gastric ulcer is almost depleted and furazolidone can completely antagonize reserpine-induced gastric ulcer. In this experiment, it was observed that NE in the brain of stressed gastric ulcer was significantly reduced, and furazolidone could partially counteract the stress ulcer. In indomethacin and pylorus ligation-induced gastric ulcer rats, without changes in brain monoamine neurotransmitter content, furazolidone ineffective on these two kinds of gastric ulcer. These results suggest that the anti-ulcer effect of furazolidone is related to its inhibition of MAO activity in the brain, thereby increasing monoamine neurotransmitter content and restoring its homeostasis.
