Contributing editor Jeff Howe describes in an article to Wired magazine how Colgate uses social networks to solve a technical dilemma that has baffled internal researchers for a long time. The company wanted to find a way to add fluoride powder to the toothpaste tube without spreading it to the surrounding air. The company stuck the technical dilemma to the InnoCentive website, a brokerage firm that connects an enterprise’s product development project with a group of scientists from different disciplines through social networks. Ed Melkarek, from Barre, Ontario, quickly came up with a solution to this technical problem and won a prize of $ 25,000. why
