近来有不少的教师提出:“活教育”的原则和办法,在今天的新中国是否适用?“活教育”和杜威教育学说的基本观点大致相同。杜威的教育学说,在新民主主义社会是不适用的,并且是有害的。现在“活教育”必需从思想体系上加以根本改造,才能克服其中错误,发扬其中某些优点,然后才能对新中国有用。因为杜威的学说是活教育的理论基础,所以我们对于杜威的学说,要首先加以批判。一从杜威学说“教育即生长”谈起“活教育理论与实施”(上海华华书店出版)第四页写道:“我提倡的活教育是和杜威的学论配合的,因为活教育和杜威学说:其出发点相同,其所走的路子相同,其所用的方法也相同。”该书第二至第三页又写道:
Recently, many teachers have put forward the following questions: Are the principles and methods of “living education” applicable in today’s New China? The basic concepts of “living education” and Dewey’s educational theory are roughly the same. Dewey’s doctrine of education is not applicable in the new-democratic society and is detrimental.
