Objective: To investigate the changes of serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) levels in children with epilepsy after absence of epilepsy and its relationship with brain injury. Methods: Twenty-two children with absence of epilepsy were selected and divided into two subgroups according to whether hyperventilation could induce seizures or absence of epilepsy: 10 cases of absence seizures and 12 cases of absence seizures; 20 cases of normal controls. Serum NSE levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The level of serum NSE was significantly higher than that of the control group (P <0.01) within 30 minutes after the onset of epilepsy. The level of NSE was significantly higher than that of the control group (P <0.01) The difference was not statistically significant (P> 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Serum NSE levels are significantly increased after the onset of absence of epilepsy, suggesting that there is a certain degree of neuronal damage after absence of epilepsy. NSE can be used as an important specific biochemical marker for early detection of neuronal damage after absence of epilepsy.
