The 1971 San Fernando earthquake was an important turning point in the development of a code for seismic design of bridges in the United States. Prior to 1971, most of the AASHTO Bridge Seismic Design Code was developed based on the California Institute of Structural Engineers rules on lateral force in buildings. In 1973, California Highway Administration introduced the seismic design standards of bridges, increased the relationship between earthquake field and active faults, seismic response and the dynamic characteristics of bridges, and strengthened the design of circular columns and foundations of substructure. Has been incorporated into the 1975 AASHTO tentatively formulated in the seismic design code.
