Many countries have legalized abortion such as China，America，Japan，France and Italy，but still about one third women cannot have a legal abortion around the world （Debate on Legality）.Although two thirds women are protected by law on abortion，some of them cannot get support from others due to the bondage of religions and morality.Some people，especially Catholics and Buddhists，regard abortion as murder.I don’t agree on that.
Abortion is a basic right for women.It is women that suffer from the pain of carrying a baby during pregnancy and undergoing childbirth.No one else carries the child for them； it will be their responsibility alone，and thus they should have the sole right to decide.Nonetheless，some people think abortion is equal to murder，as they believe “Abortion is in direct defiance of the commonly accepted idea of the sanctity of human life.” I think they make a mistake in the understanding of abortion.We cannot refer to a fetus as a human being.Most women terminate pregnancy in the first trimester.At that time the development of a fetus is in the initial stage，and the brain even doesn’t begin to develop.（The brain of a fetus begins to develop after 20 weeks.） So a fetus is quite different from a child.According to a survey analyzing abortion reasons in 27 countries，68.9% women have an induced abortion because they cannot provide their unborn babies with a good environment or enough time to care about them（Akinrinola Reasons Why Women Have Induced Abortions）.They have an abortion for their own and the unborn babies’ sake.Once having a child，women have to put a lot of time，energy and money on him or her，so they have rights to decide when to have a child.
For women’s health and life security，we shouldn’t ban abortion.If abortion is banned，women who want an abortion will choose other ways，such as having an abortion in an underground clinic or travelling to other places to do it.Both of the two ways have some potential risks.A ban would not stop abortion but would drive it underground.Every year，there are about 44 million abortions in the world，half of which are unsafe.It results in the death of 70 thousand women and 5 million medical accidents （I Unsafe Abortion）.If medical conditions are good and operations are conducted properly，abortion is one of the safest operations.But due to prohibition by law or opposition from people around，some pregnant women have to go to underground clinics.Many of those clinics are unqualified in medical conditions and techniques，which may easily lead to infection and even operation failures，huge hurts to women.Pro-life supporters think abortion is in direct disrespect to human beings.Women are also human beings，but do they respect women？ With women’s health taken into account，we should respect their choice and make laws to support their right of abortion.Only then can abortion accidents be avoided as much as possible. Besides health and life security，we must also consider psychological states of abortion women.In America，there are many national prolife organizations，some of which use extreme actions to stop abortions，such as bombing clinics which provide abortion services，threatening abortion doctors，showing bleeding dead fetuses in front of the clinics.Those actions exert huge pressure on women.When women send their unborn babies away，some of them may feel sad and guilty.If those women are further hit by extreme actions，they are very likely to have a nervous breakdown.American Journal of Psychological Medicine once studied the psychological status of 500 women who had had abortions.The result showed 43% of the total would have negative emotions as soon as the abortion was done and 10% would still suffer from severe psychological problems long after the abortion （Abortion May Cause Psychological Hurt）.When a woman has an abortion，we should let her rest for a while as well as help and care about her once she has some negative emotions.Those extreme prolife supporters think what they do is protect lives，but actually，they even don’t respect lives because what they do hurts a lot of women.
In most cases，women who have an abortion may have their own rational reasons.They don’t hate babies or defy lives at all.We are supposed to make allowances for women’s difficulties and protect their right of abortion for the sake of their life security and mental health.
