乔治·福尔曼,曾经是拳坛上声威显赫、不可一世的人物。这位1973年至1974年度世界重量级拳王,在做了10多年虔诚的传教士之后,突然异想天开地重返拳台,以42岁的“高龄”挑战当今拳王霍利菲尔德,竟然同他打满了12个回合而屹立不倒,虽败犹荣,一时间名声大噪,隐隐然有凌驾霍利菲尔德之势。这听起来颇象是一部电影的情节,实际上,乔治·福尔曼的经历里,多的是这样有趣的场景,这一个个场景连接起来,就清楚地勾划出了福尔曼多彩的一生。在他短暂的业余拳击生涯里,福尔曼赢得了“屠夫”的雅号,因为在他面前,所有对手都显得那么软弱无力,只有听任宰割的份儿。经过10多场战斗,福尔曼获得了代表美国参加墨西哥城奥运会的资格。在那里,福尔曼小露锋芒,四战全胜,重量级拳击的奥运会金牌就挂在他脖子上,于是他志得意满地在拳台上欢呼时,他那硕大无朋、令对手胆战心寒的拳头里,就多了一面小巧的美国国旗。这是1968年的事。
